Preparing to Celebrate Victor's First Birthday!

If this is how breakfast is received, I can't wait to see what he does with CAKE! If this is how breakfast is received, I can't wait to see what he does with CAKE!

We're coming up on Victor's first birthday - time goes by so quickly!  It seems like just yesterday that I was as big as a house and complaining about being sooo tired and swollen!  I can't say that the "tired" part has been solved...but as my mom tells me, that won't go away until he's in his 20's.  Nevertheless, I'm very excited to be preparing to celebrate Victor's first year!

All throughout this year, Billy and I have been reading the "What to Expect in the First Year" books, as well as the Dr. Harvey Karp books "The Happiest Baby on the Block" and "The Happiest Toddler on the Block".  The other night, Billy happened upon a paragraph in the "What to Expect" book about celebrating baby's first birthday.  They touched on a few things that I wouldn't have otherwise thought about - so I Googled "Baby's First Birthday".  I found a whole bunch of "party ideas" and "themes" but also a few tips here.

The first thing that the book brought up was the cake.  Now, I've seen tons of videos and photos of babies on their first birthday in their high chair with cake smeared all over their face - chocolate or otherwise.  The "What to Expect" book recommended carrot cake as a healthier alternative, as chocolate isn't necessarily the best choice for the 12-month old.  Frosting can be super-sugar-packed, too - so we're going to look for a good low-sugar cream cheese frosting recipe for our carrot cake.

Next, the book brought up guests.   Sure, we all want to celebrate baby's first birthday and have all of our friends and family there too - but too many people can be just too much for the little one to handle.  They suggest keeping it to family that baby is familiar with, or just a short guest list in general.  Either way, the most important things are to remember that baby still needs to stick fairly close to the regular routine and that baby will need lots of one-on-one attention.

Our plans for Victor so far aren't set in stone, but we're considering a brief outing to the park with some friends, Nama & Grandpa.  Carrot cake and a couple of presents - I want to get him a wagon, and I think Billy wants to get him a new ride-on toy. We're planning to play a little and look back on the last year of Victor's life.  He hasn't been here long, but I couldn't imagine life without him.   I can't imagine a full night's sleep either - but it's all worth it!

A quick note  - there've been some new babies coming into the KHQ family lately, so to all of your families from ours, congratulations!
