Hot spots approaching 100 degrees for holiday weekend

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. - The heat is on. Look forward to a scorching hot Fourth of July weekend. The Inland Northwest will stay sunny and in the 90s through the weekend with the hottest spots approaching 100 degrees. Thunderstorms should stay to the south until Sunday.

High pressure is surging, sending temperatures soaring to the hottest reading so far this season. Sunday this ridge will break down as a low pressure system, now off the California coast, sends moisture and cooling temperatures to the Inland Northwest. Monsoon moisture over southern Idaho and Oregon is pressing north and may break through the hot and dry airmass as early as Saturday night to produce mountain thunderstorms over Northeast Oregon and the Camas Prairie.

Monday, the weather pattern turns cooler and unsettled as the California low moves northward over our area. Plan on afternoon highs back in the 70s (normal to below normal for early July) with clouds and sprinkles at times.

Fire Danger is a major concern over the entire area for the next 4 days. Hot temperatures, low humidity and the possibility of dry lightning plus fireworks are all coming together. Please use caution and have a happy and safe Fourth of July.
