SPOKANE, Wash. - One person is dead and another is on the loose following a fatal stabbing in East Spokane just before 10 p.m. Monday in the 400 block of S. Greene St.

Detectives say the victim, 24-year-old Vitaliy Shevchuk, left a house on S. Greene and was walking with a friend to a nearby store. A Toyota Yaris with three people inside drove by the pair and at some point, there was an exchange of words which eventually led to a fight.

Shevchuk was said to have thrown a large rock through the rear window of the car. The three people in the car reportedly had knives when the fight became physical and Shevchuk was stabbed. The three people then fled the scene in the car. At least one witness was able to get the license plate number of the car.

When police and medical crews arrived on scene,  Shevchuk was said to be suffering a life-threatening wound.

He was transported to an area hospital just before 11 p.m. and was pronounced dead just after 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Police found the car in the area of Denver and Carlisle and discovered the owner of that car to be Savannah Frye. Police are searching for Frye as a person of interest, as well as the other two men that were in the car.

Anyone with any information about Frye's whereabouts is asked to call 911. If you have information about the stabbing, you are asked to call Crime Check at 456-2233.

The Spokane Police Department have investigated 5 homicides so far in 2009, 3 of which have been stabbings.
