73-year-old woman killed in head-on collision on Hwy. 291

SPOKANE, Wash. - Hwy. 291, about one mile south of Charles Rd., was closed for more than three hours following a head-on collision that left one woman dead Wednesday afternoon.

The Washington State Patrol says a Toyota Corolla, being driven by 73-year-old Mary Schellhammer of Deer Park, was heading northbound on Hwy 291 when Schellhammer failed to negotiate the curve and crossed the center line hitting a southbound Honda Accord head-on.

Schellhammer was transported to Deaconess Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

There were five people in the Accord and fire crews had to use the jaws of life to cut the roof off of the vehicle to extricate the driver and the passengers.  The 28-year-old female driver of the Accord, a 39-year-old female passenger, a 14-year-old male passenger and a 16-year-old female passenger were all transported to local hospitals with unknown injuries.  A 3-year-old riding in the Accord was not injured.

WSP says everyone involved in the collision was wearing seat-belts or proper child restraints.
