Salmonella risk prompts recall of 22,000 lettuce cartons

Posted: Updated:
CALIFORNIA. - Tanimura and Antle of Salinas, California is recalling 22,000 cartons of romaine lettuce.

The product may be contaminated with salmonella.

The cartons were harvested from June 25 to July 2 and are marked with the code 531380.

So far there have been no reports of anyone getting sick and the lettuce is likely no longer on store shelves.

The company was notified by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture that a randomly tested box tested at a wholesale distribution center had tested positive for salmonella.

Within hours, Tanimura and Antle contacted all affected customers to pull the 22,000 cartons of its bulk or wrapped lettuce products from the shelves.

Tanimura and Antle says the recalled romaine is well past its 14-16 day shelf life and does not believe any still exists in the marketplace, but the company still advises caution.

The company says there are no reported illnesses and are using an abundance of caution, saying they want to minimize any possible risk to public health.

The recall coincides with food safety legislation currently moving through Congress.
