Spokane County issues burn ban for unincorporated areas of county

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane County Interim Building Director Mark Holman, who also holds County Fire Code Official responsibilities, Tuesday issued an immediate Burn Ban Order for any currently unauthorized 'open burning' and recreational fires within the unincorporated areas of Spokane County through September 15, 2009. At that time, the possibility of continuing the ban will be evaluated in consultation with local Fire Protection agencies.

The ban is not intended to halt sanctioned burning, such as field burning, provided appropriate approvals are obtained. It also does not halt the use of backyard barbecues, chimneys and other patio and deck warmers as long as only approved fuel such as seasoned firewood, briquettes, or propane is used.

Failure to comply with the burn ban could have serious consequences. Anyone who does any open burning and does not stop when ordered to can face a fine of $1,000 and 90 days in jail.
