HAILEY, Idaho - Shortly after the first report two weeks ago that a U.S. soldier had been captured in Afghanistan, a small circle of people in this central Idaho town found out it was one of their own but kept it quiet. Pfc. Bowe R. Bergdahl, a 23 year-old who was home-schooled, danced at the ballet school and rode his bike all over the town of 7,000, was in the hands of the Taliban. >>INSIDE: New informaiton and pictures>>

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan. - A militant commander who is holding a U.S. soldier abducted in Afghanistan says his fate depends on the U.S. response to Taliban demands.

The insurgent commander, Maulvi Sangin, for eastern Afghanistan says Taliban leader Mullah Omar's council will decide the fate of the soldier.

It was the first news of Pfc. Bowe R. Bergdahl made public since a Taliban video was released July 18.

The commander would not elaborate on the demands or say if any deadline had been given. A spokesman had previously said the soldier would be killed unless the U.S. stops airstrikes in two areas of eastern Afghanistan.

Bergdahl, of Hailey, Idaho, was serving with an Alaska-based infantry regiment when he disappeared June 30, just five months after arriving in Afghanistan.

There's no U.S. comment.
