Arsonists torch three vehicles on the South Hill

SPOKANE, Wash. - People in a South Hill neighborhood woke up to the sound of fire, police sirens and their cars set on fire early Sunday morning.  Three cars were set on fire within a block of each other between 31st Ave. and 32nd Ave., and between Myrtle St. and Cuba St.

It's the second time in as many months that arson fires have been set in this general area of the South Hill.

Cars were the target, but South Hill resident Victor Pastarnak says his family almost lost a lot more,  "I heard a car take off, loud muffler and some banging noise, I was sleepy but I saw some kind of lights, yellow lights that looked like a towing truck and thought no that's too intense and I looked out the window and saw black smoke."

Victor says two of the cars in his driveway were on fire and their garage also started to catch fire melting the plastic along the garage door.

Firefighters and police were on scene within seconds because they had just put out another car fire a block away on 32nd. Ave.  The were able to extinguish the fire quickly before it could spread from the garage to the rest of the house.

Victor and his wife Natalia say recently they've had some problems in their neighborhood, two stereos stolen, and someone tried to break into their home.

Natalia says she's just happy their kids weren't home, but she's still frightened, "I'm scared and worried about the kids, especially with victor being a truck driver now, he's going to be gone and I'm going to be home with the kids and I don't feel safe."

"I'm still shocked, we lost two cars.  It's a sick joke, whoever did this, very sick joke." added Victor.

Fire investigators say the fires were arson and believe they are related because they were both set right around 4 a.m. Sunday and were within a block of each other.   Right now investigators do not have any leads or suspects.
