Colleges bemoan Anheuser-Busch 'Fan Cans'

WASHINGTON- Dozens of colleges have complained about a new Anheuser-Busch promotion that features Bud Light beer cans emblazoned with local schools' team colors.

The new Bud Light "Fan Can" marketing campaign involves 27 color combinations, including red-and-gold cans sold around Iowa State University and purple-and-gold cans sold around Louisiana State University.

College administrators argue that the promotion could contribute to underage and binge drinking and gives the impression that schools are endorsing beer, according to the newspaper.

Carol Clark, vice president for corporate social responsibility at Anheuser-Busch, said the campaign is aimed at fans who are 21 and older and was timed to coincide with the beginning of the football season and baseball playoffs.

The brewer has stopped offering the cans in communities where organizations have requested it, she said.

Belgium-based InBev bought St. Louis-based Anheuser Busch for $52 billion last year, creating Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world's largest brewer.
