SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane police are investigating a robbery at the Walgreens Pharmacy located at 29th Ave. and Grand Blvd. on Spokane's south hill.  Police say a male suspect robbed the pharmacy of Oxycontin shortly after 3:00 Sunday afternoon. According to Walgreens employees the suspect entered the store and walked to the pharmacy were he handed an employee a note demanding all of the stores Oxycontin and stating he had a gun. >>

SPOKANE, Wash. - Following numerous Walgreens robberies in which the popular painkiller Oxycontin was targeted, the pharmacy has installed time-lock security cabinets in all of its pharmacies across Washington State.

The time-lock cabinets are similar to those used in the banking setting and protect employees and customers by simply eliminating immediate availability to the drug.

The timer on the cabinets is activated when a pharmacist turns the key and will open several minutes later. No specific time was given, but officials with Walgreens say it allows more time for police to arrive on scene.

"The robbers are coming in and they want to get in and out as quick as possible, said Robert Elfinger with Walgreens. "If they know that it's going to take several minutes... we think it'll stop the problem."

Elfinger says that pharmacy robberies are 'a phenomenon in Washington' in that the state only has 120 to 130 Walgreens' pharmacies, but sees many more robberies than Texas, a state with more than 600 pharmacies.

If a robber decides to risk staying, the amount of time spent in the pharmacy would allow for multiple pictures to be taken and would provide a better memory to pharmacy employees of what the suspect looks like.
