Spokane County jail expansion faces another delay

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. - Another delay has surfaced in the proposed expansion of the Spokane County Jail.

Spokane County Commissioners and the Spokane County Sheriffs Office have agreed the current jail is overcrowded. The debate now is over where to additional jail facility would be built.

Commissioners have spent time and money researching different locations for the new jail, but it wasn't until recently that commissioners realized the construction costs involved.

The original proposal was to build another tower next to the existing jail, costing tax payers $265 million in construction costs alone.

Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich says building a horizontal building somewhere else in the county would cost less at $229 million.

Spokane County Commissioners motioned to continue the search for a new jail site and re-open the Essential Public Facility process, or EPF.

"I think that's called due diligence to make sure we have done everything we can to insure the citizens of Spokane are going to pay a fair price for building a new jail and we've covered every aspect of doing that," said Knezovich.

Re-opening the EPF process will cost tax payers another $80,000. Commissioners feel the additional cost will be worth it.
