13 months old...22 months since we began...and about to do it again!

Victor is 13 months old.  He is not just walking around, he is RUNNING.  He's started to *almost* use words.  I can't believe time has flown by so quickly!

Yesterday on our way to baby-school, Victor was "commenting" on my music choice.  Every time I clicked the iPod to a new song, he'd respond with a loud "dum!"  But when I switched the music over to John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom", Victor responded with a happy squeal and started "singing" along.  This is pretty common (especially with the blues) for Victor, but what happened next was a total surprise to me.  Midway through the song, JLH sang, "boom boom boom boom..." Victor sang, "laaaa laaa laaa".  Then JLH sang, "bang bang bang bang" and Victor echoed, "Bang!  Bang!  Bang! Bang!"  I nearly drove off the road.  I can't exactly say it was his "first word", because I don't think he knows what it means...but this little parroting was just adorable!

Victor loves books - and we love to read with him.  His favorites right now are the Usborne "touchy-feely" books like "That's Not My Monster" and "That's Not My Monkey", and the Richard Scary "Best First Book Ever."  The Richard Scary book really is a great one, because it is a GIANT book with tons and tons of pictures with their corresponding words next to it.   He likes to pull it off of the shelf and sit in either Billy or my lap.  He points at the pictures and makes sounds.  "Dah!" and "Doohsh!" and "UhDum!"   Sometimes, he'll make a super-surprised face and go, "ooooooooh!"  It's all too cute.   Everything he does (even when it frustrates me) is cute.   When people say "it's a love you've never felt before", they're right.  It's so hard to describe - but I just love that little boy more than I ever thought possible!

He's definitely started to assert himself more.  He knows what he wants and will point & "talk" until he gets it or gets redirected.  He throws little "tantrums" when he doesn't get what he wants or has something taken away.  Typically, the tantrum is a "stiff-as-a-board" pitching of his entire body over backwards.  It's quite dramatic.  I tell him that, after telling him the name of the feeling I think he's expressing.  I tell him, "You're angry!"  or "You're frustrated!" and then reinforce why he may be feeling that way.  "You wanted that cell phone!"  then I'll tell him his tantrum is so dramatic, and sometimes will tell him how effective it is.  "This one is really working - because I feel bad for taking it away!"  I hope this approach is the right one - I guess only time will tell.   Then again, is any approach "the right one"?  Every child is different, every family is different - parents interact with their kids differently everywhere you go.  I guess if Victor turns out confident, happy, respectful and open to others' feelings, then I did okay.

You may have noticed the title of this blog entry - we're about to do it all over again.  Assuming that everything goes without incident from here on out...Victor is going to be a big brother!  My first doctor appointment is today, but the test this last weekend was positive!  I'm hoping to make more time to continue to update the blog as often as possible with this pregnancy too.   I've heard so many things about the 2nd time around being a different experience - we'll see how that goes!

Thanks for reading!
