Sexual misconduct charges reduced for Yakima teacher

YAKIMA, Wash. - A Yakima high school teacher will appear in court October 16, charged with second-degree sexual misconduct and communicating with a minor for immoral purposes.  However, those are lesser charges than prosecutors said they intended to file.

East Valley High School teacher P.E. teacher Michele Taylor, 31, is accused of having sexual contact with a 16-year-old student. She's also accused of sending a suggestive photo of herself to a 15-year-old boy.

Initially, prosecutors said they planned to file charges of first-degree sexual misconduct, which is a felony with a maximum punishment of up to five years in prison.  Instead, Taylor will face misdemeanor charges.  She has pleaded not guilty to those charges and has requested a jury trial.

Taylor has been on paid leave since June.  The school district's attorney says Taylor will continue to receive her regular salary of $42,500 per year until an agreement can be reached or until Taylor is fired.
