Swine Flu likely to blame for spike in school absences

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. - Swine Flu is now likely to blame for a massive spike in student absences across the Pacific Northwest.

One of the hardest hit schools is East Valley Middle School where officials have canceled all after school programs in an effort to combat the spread of the virus.
H1N1 swine flu loves a crowd

The school estimates that more than 15 percent of students are out with flu like symptoms, a number nearly double that of the average district and more than four times what the school experiences this time of year.

Apart from school custodians disinfecting cafeteria tables before and after the students break for lunch, the school says extra personnel have been brought in to clean door knobs and water fountains among other surfaces where the virus is likely to be.

School officials say the health department has told them to expect up to 20 percent of the student body to be out with flu like symptoms at least until the H1N1 vaccine is released which should be in early October.
