BILLINGS, Mont. - A federal judge says gray wolf hunts in the Northern Rockies can go on, denying a request by environmentalists and animal welfare groups to stop the first organized wolf hunts in Idaho and Montana in decades. U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy said that plans to kill about 20 percent of the two states' estimated 1,350 wolves would not cause long-term harm to the population. COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho. - Members of the Sandpoint-based North Idaho Wolf Alliance turned out at the Cd'A Fish and Game office Friday morning to protest the state's first regulated wolf hunt. Alongside the protesters was a smaller group who came out to show their support of the hunts. The wolf hunts in the Panhandle district would run until 2010 or until 30 wolves in are killed. Each district in the state determines the number of wolves to be killed based on its wolf population. >>

BOISE, Idaho. - Idaho's wolf kill tally is growing. Idaho Fish and Game officials say hunters so far have bagged 15 of the predators.

Robert Millage, the first hunter to report a wolf kill in Idaho says he's been flooded with nasty messages since his name hit the national media. >>More

KBCI-TV in Boise reports that only one of the kills since the season opened Sept. 1 was illegal. In that case, a man was accused by witnesses of shooting a wolf in an area off-limits to hunting wolves.

Fish and Game Spokesman Ed Mitchell says the number of wolf kills could increase in coming weeks as Idaho's big game hunting seasons open for business and wolf hunting expands October 1 to include every state hunting district.

Mitchell says the most recent kills were reported Sunday and Monday.

An ongoing court case challenges the legality of the wolf hunts in Montana and Idaho, but a judge earlier this month decided not to intervene in the hunts.
