SPOKANE, Wash. - The most notable cuts stemming from a projected $7 million budget shortfall faced by Spokane are coming from the public safety sector which will absorb about 60 percent of the shortfall. As police officers and firefighters brace for the worst, officials say they won't be the only ones feeling the crunch and warn you could too. Thursday, Mayor Verner commented that $7 million is not a small deficit and said Spokane residents may very well feel the impending cuts.>>

SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane Mayor Mary Verner will deliver the annual Statement of the Conditions and Affairs of the City of Spokane on Monday, October 12, as part of the City Council's regular 6 p.m. meeting.

During her speech, Mayor Verner intends to showcase some of the City's accomplishments since the first of year, review the City's budget and financial condition and present a number of opportunities for the future.

Mayor Verner will deliver the statement in the Council Chambers in the lower level of City Hall, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd.

For the 2010 General Fund Budget, the City already is dealing with a $7 million shortfall as a result of the national and local economic downturn. Some agencies have already developed plans to help meet that budget shortfall including the Spokane Fire Department and City Prosecutors. >>More on firefighters and prosecutors

To date, City of Spokane employees have provided about $1.7 million in savings through changes in wages and benefits to help balance the City's 2010 budget after the City asked its employee groups to participate in solving half the $7 million shortfall.

Also next week, Mayor Verner will be holding the last in a series of town hall meetings to talk about the city's 2010 budget. The meeting is scheduled on Wednesday, October 14 at the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture.

Verner's proposed 2010 City of Spokane Budget is due to the City Council by November 1.

Under City Charter, the Mayor is required to deliver the annual address on the second Monday in October.

The speech will be shown live on CityCable 5.
