Culdesac School District closes due to student illness

CULDESAC, Idaho. - The Culdesac School District has canceled school for the remainder of the week following a 50 percent absentee rate among elementary-age students.

The children are reported to have flu-like symptoms including low-grade fevers.

Culdesac runs a kindergarten through 12th grade school of 120 students.

After school activities have also been canceled or rescheduled.

This is the first time the school has closed due to an illness.

The elementary school in the Kamiah Joint School District has also closed for the remainder of the week after 64 of 206 students were absent due to illness. The district reports eight staff members are also out.

Both the Kamiah and Culdesac closures come as the Panhandle Health District reports school absentee rates in some northern Idaho schools are double and triple the normal rates for this time of year, which parents, particularly those of children with underlying health problems, need to note.

The PHD says most absences are attributed to H1N1 influenza. While most people who stay home and take care of themselves recover from the flu, anyone with health problems that weaken the immune system is at risk of complications if they catch the virus.
