Let’s talk BUSINESS, SHOTS and SHOPPING!

Posted: Updated:

It seems like every year the “flu shot” conversation gets started again – this year, the H1N1 or Swine Flu vaccination seems to be on top of the list.   Is it safe for kids?  Is it safe for pregnant women?  Is it necessary for either one?  I had a TON of questions about it, especially because of Victor’s age and my stage of pregnancy.   I did as much research as I could online, but mostly found opinion pieces from other people.  Not to say those opinions don’t matter, but I wanted hard facts.  At my 3-month trip to the Obstetrician, I asked for some information.  Here’s what I learned:

One of the big concerns with vaccinations is Thiomersal.  Thiomersal is the compound used in some vaccines as a preservative and is approximately 49% mercury by weight.     Indeed, there ARE some flu vaccines (both seasonal and H1N1) that contain Thiomersal.  What  I found out from my doctor that made me feel better was that you CAN request a vaccine that does not contain Thiomersal, and sometimes it is available.

Because the H1N1 flu can be particularly dangerous to pregnant women, it is strongly recommended that we get the vaccine for our own safety and that of the baby.  After learning that I could get the shot without the Thiomersal, I decided to go for it.  It had been tested with pregnant women and appeared to have no extra effects…so I did it (once I officially hit the 2nd trimester).  I also decided to do the same thing for Victor.  Neither one of us got the seasonal flu shot (yet?) because getting them both in the same day hadn’t been tested for pregnant women and little guys like Victor, and with that, I didn’t want to take any risks.  I’m considering getting the seasonal flu shot at my next doctor visit, but haven’t decided yet.  My husband is still trying to decide if he wants to get either shot for himself.

Speaking of doctors, let’s talk about business.  My doctor works with Rockwood – and if you’ve read/seen the news lately, you’ve probably heard buzz about a merger or purchase involving Rockwood and the company that purchased Deaconess last year.  I had heard that the relationship between the doctors and Sacred Heart (where Victor was born) would be going away.   Not that it would be that much of a bother to have to go to a new hospital to have this baby, but I really would prefer to have the baby where I’m already familiar.   I decided to get the facts and ask my doctor.  As it turns out, I can still give birth in whatever hospital I want with my doctor.   Big “whew!” on that one.  If you have questions about what’s going on with your doctors and the business, ASK THEM.   It helps clear up all the stories floating out there.

Lastly, I have to admit that I’m chomping at the bit to find out if “Biscuit” is a boy or a girl.   First, I’ve had far worse morning sickness this time around than I did last time and I can’t help but wonder if it’s different because I could be carrying a baby of a different sex than last time.  Second, I’ve been trying to sort through all of Victor’s outgrown clothes – sorting by size and pulling out the unisex stuff.  If Biscuit is a boy, I can stop separating the white, yellow, green & orange stuff and just sort by size.  If Biscuit is a girl, I can stop sorting all the boy clothes.  Plus, I can’t start shopping until I know!

Speaking of shopping…my sister has been sending us lots of stuff for Victor that she’s been able to find at great savings, BRAND NEW on eBay.  For example, Vic was running low on shoes in his size, and within a couple of days, Aunt Kelly had sent us a box full of shoes that she said she got for a STEAL!  Have a look for yourself by clicking here or by clicking on “Shop eBay” under the SHOP NOW tab in the KHQ.com navigation.
