PARKLAND, Wash. - A gunman who killed four police officers at a coffee shop in Washington may have been wounded by one of the officers.

Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer told reporters Sunday afternoon that one of the officers struggled out the door and fired his gun at the attacker.

Troyer asked clinics and hospitals to report anyone who shows up with a gun wound.

Troyer says two of the officers were shot and killed as they sat at a table Sunday morning, working on their laptops. One was shot standing up and the fourth fought with the gunman and made it outside and was able to get off some shots.

State aiding probe of Lakewood police shooting

Gov. Chris Gregoire says the Washington State Patrol and Department of Corrections are helping investigate the slaying of four Lakewood police officers at a Parkland coffee shop.

Washington state Attorney General Rob McKenna told KOMO Radio he's offered criminal investigation resources of his office to the Pierce County sheriff's office, including a homicide investigation tracking system.

He issued this statement:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the police officers murdered today in Lakewood," McKenna said. "This outrageous act of violence against our brave protectors is a direct assault on the safety of our entire community. I have directed all of the criminal justice resources of this office, including our Homicide Investigation Tracking System and HITS Unit criminal investigators, be made available to those conducting the investigation into these assassinations. Our prosecutors and investigators stand ready to help bring those who committed this murderous act to justice." >>More on HITS

Gregoire also issued a statement on the shootings Sunday afternoon:

"I am shocked and horrified at the murder of four police officers this morning in Pierce County.  Our police put their lives on the line every day, and tragedies like this remind us of the risks they continually take to keep our communities safe.  My heart goes out to the family, friends and co-workers of these officers, as well as the entire law enforcement community.  I offer whatever support is needed to the Pierce County Sheriff in their search for the perpetrator of this terrible crime."

'Forza' coffee company also issued a statement saying the company will establish a donation area at each coffee house to help the families of the officers.

"It is Forza's goal to help the families of those who lost their lives during this difficult holiday season and into the new year as they struggle to reconstruct their lives in the year ahead," said Forza owner, Rich Jennings.

4 slain were original Lakewood officers

The city of Lakewood says the four officers shot to death at a Parkland coffee shot were original members of the police department that formed five years ago.

A statement from Mayor Douglas Richardson and City Manager Andrew Neiditz says they all transferred to Lakewood from other jurisdictions.

The statement says names will be released after extended family members are notified.

The department had 100 commissioned officers before Sunday's shooting.
