Cheetah contracts, recovers from swine flu

SANTA ROSA, Calif. - A cheetah at Safari West in Santa Rosa, California is said to be doing well after contracting the swine flu in November.

On November 15, the cheetah, Gijima, began exhibiting signs of lethargy, showed no interest in food and was coughing.

Gijima is the first Cheetah in the United States to contract the swine flu

Director of Safari West, Nancy Anne Lang, Ph.D., noted a story in USA Today that reported a house cat had contracted H1N1. Due to the fact that Gijima's symptoms were similar to the house cat, Lang wanted to have the cheetah tested for possible H1N1. She was right, the test was positive and Gijima became the first Cheetah in the United States to contract the Swine Flu.

Gijima has recovered fully. She is eating well, playing soccer with her handlers and full of spirit.
