    SPOKANE, Wash. - Police detained a suspected gunman after using a K9 unit to track the man to a backyard in the 2400 block of N. Normandie near Garfield Elementary School where he was hiding in a dog house Friday.>>
    SPOKANE, Wash. - Police detained a suspected gunman after using a K9 unit to track the man to a backyard in the 2400 block of N. Normandie near Garfield Elementary School where he was hiding in a dog house Friday. The man is suspected of getting into a car stopped in traffic near Division and Buckeye and shooting the driver around 3 p.m. He then fled the scene on foot. The driver of the car, a 20-year-old man, has been taken to the hospital and is listed in critical condition.>>

SPOKANE, Wash. - A 55-year-old man who was shot Friday afternoon while sitting in traffic in North Spokane is said to be in stable condition.

Friday, around 3 p.m., Donald Young was stopped in traffic in the area of Buckeye and Division when 30-year-old Joseph Ellery got into his car in an attempt to collect a debt.

Court documents state that Ellery demanded money or the car.

The man was stopped and sitting in his white Mitsubishi when Ellery got in attempting to collect a debt

Young got out of the car and the two men started wrestling for a gun when a shot was fired and Young was struck. Ellery then tried to flee from the scene in Young's car but was unsuccessful and ended up running away on foot.

When police arrived on scene, they found Young with a gunshot wound lying on the ground.

Officers brought in a K9 unit to track Ellery down and found him hiding in a dog house behind a home in the 2500 block of N. Normandie. He was arrested and charged with First Degree Robbery and Major Crimes detectives have since requested additional charges of First Degree Robbery and Drive By Shooting.

Spokane Police Officer Jennifer DeRuwe said the incident that left Young injured appears to have been over drugs and says Ellery was high at the time.

"As we're seeing in a lot of crimes, drugs are behind the majority of crimes and when you're high on some sort of magic drug like meth and you mix in a gun, people can get hurt," said DeRuwe.

Ellery has previously been convicted on burglary and attempted theft charges.
