Bomb Squad removes powerful explosive from Spokane Valley apartment

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. - A 53-year-old man is under arrest after the Spokane County Bomb Squad removed a powerful explosive material from his Spokane Valley apartment Monday night.

Over the New Year's holiday, detectives received information that John Raymond was making an explosive, found to be TATP, in his apartment in the 700 block of N. McDonald.

Monday, detectives interviewed Raymond and confirmed with him that he did have the explosive.

Once Raymond, who is confined to a wheelchair, was out of his Oakwood Club apartment, authorities evacuated other nearby apartments and McDonald Rd. was shut down.

The Spokane County Explosives Disposal Unit (EDU) was called in and used a robot to remotely remove the explosive from the apartment, a process that took more than four hours.

After the explosive was removed it was taken to a gravel pit where it was detonated.

Raymond was arrested on an outstanding warrant and booked into the Spokane County Jail. Detectives say additional charges related to the explosive are possible.

TATP is a compound that appears as a crystal or powder and is made from easily obtained chemicals such as acetone and hydrogen peroxide. Raymond's stash was contained in a glass jar.
