Spokane Valley Mayor and Deputy Mayor appointed

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. - Tom Towey and Gary Schimmels were selected by their fellow council members to serve as Spokane Valley's Mayor and Deputy Mayor, respectively, at the new Council's first meeting Tuesday evening.

Towey and Schimmels will each serve two-year terms in those offices through 2011.

The offices of Mayor and Deputy Mayor are selected by council members from among their colleagues through a nomination and ballot process.

Mayor Tom Towey was elected to the City Council in November of 2009 to serve a four year term through 2013.  A lifelong Spokane Valley resident, Towey is a retired supermarket manager who majored in business at Eastern Washington University. He has been involved in the community as a Spokane Valley Planning Commissioner, S.C.O.P.E. volunteer, speaker for the Spokane Regional Health District and more.

Deputy Mayor Gary Schimmels is one of the City's original council members and has served continuously since his election in November of 2002.  A local business owner, Schimmels was also a construction industry employee, owner and operator for thirty years. Schimmels also attended EWU and served in the United States Army.
