OLYMPIA, Wash. - Before a joint session of the House and Senate, Gov. Gregoire Tuesday proposed closing or partially closing five correctional facilities across Washington. The closures, according to Gregoire, would save the state more than $60 million while at the same time, would not affect prisoner release dates. "By more efficiently using the beds we have, we can save $65 million over four years and not release a single offender prior to his or her earned release date," said Gregoire.>>

OLYMPIA, Wash. - Gov. Chris Gregoire wants the Legislature to save about $780 million worth of programs from the budget ax. OLYMPIA, Wash. - The state treasurer says Gov. Chris Gregoire and the Legislature must act quickly to address a serious cash-flow problem. In a recent letter to top state officials, Treasurer Jim McIntire says the state could actually run out of money by September if the government's finances aren't addressed.>>

OLYMPIA, Wash. - Gov. Chris Gregoire has unveiled an economic recovery plan that she says could help spark 40,000 jobs in Washington.

The Democratic governor's 10-point plan includes tax incentives, streamlined permitting procedures, and energy savings.

The whole thing would cost about $15 million through mid-2011. It's a new plan, separate from her proposed supplemental budget.

The most expensive item costs about $10.7 million. That proposal would tweak an existing tax credit for rural counties, and put in place a new, one-time $2,000 tax credit for each new full-time hire that lasts at least a year.

State legislators are considering their own job proposals. One measure would sell bonds to back energy-efficient upgrades at public buildings.
