Espresso stand robber linked to 5 crimes

SPOKANE, Wash. - Robbery charges against a Spokane man are multiplying as Spokane Police continue to link the suspect to more and more crimes in the Spokane area.

Shawn Westlie was arrested Friday afternoon on a robbery charge following a stand-off with police in the area of Belt and Montgomery. The stand-off started around 3:30 p.m. as police were investigating the robbery of the Spokane's Best Espresso stand that occurred on January 13.

The investigation led officers to a home in the 2100 block of W. Montgomery Ct. where Westlie was believed to be hiding. After about 90 minutes, Westlie surrendered to officers and was arrested.

In a press release Monday, police stated they believe Westlie is also responsible for a late December robbery of Jitterz Java and a residential burglary that occurred on January 14.

Later Monday, police stated Westlie is facing two additional 1st Degree Robbery charges for his role in two Quizno's robberies on October 24. Police have also charged Victor Hackett, 45, with two counts of 1st degree robbery in the Quizno's robberies. Hackett is already in Spokane County Jail on unrelated charges.

Westlie is now facing four 1st Degree Robbery Charges and one 1st Degree Burglary Charge for his alleged role in the following crimes:

  • Quizno's robbery - 1600 block of N. Division - October 24, 7:30 p.m.
  • Quizno's robbery - 6100 block of N. Division - October 24, 8:15 p.m.
  • Jitterz Java robbery - 2100 block of W. Northwest Blvd. - December 29, 6:20 a.m.
  • Spokane's Best Espresso robbery - January 13, 1:20 p.m.
  • Residential burglary - 2300 block of N. Nettleton - January 14, 11:45 a.m.

In the residential burglary, a homeowner returning to his house in the 2300 block of N. Nettleton, arrived to find a stolen car parked in his driveway. He walked inside his house to find a skinny, toothless man inside; a man that police now believe was Westlie

A brief scuffle between the homeowner and burglary suspect ensued and ended with the homeowner hitting the burglar on the head with a stick.

The burglar made his way from the house but left behind a taser, one shoe and the stolen car.

In the Jitterz Java robbery, the suspect was able to get away with an undisclosed amount of cash.

PULLMAN, Wash. - Six-year-old Denny Curran should be enjoying his last few days of summer before first grade. He should be teasing his brother, splashing in the pool, giving his parents a hard time about vegetables. Instead, Denny is dead, the victim of a horrific, freak bicycle accident that could happen to your child too. "Denny was an extraordinary child," his father Keith Curran told KHQ.
