North Bend hunter found dead in Adams County

ADAMS COUNTY, Wash. - A 70-year-old hunter from the North Bend area was found dead Thursday by Adams County sheriff's deputies who had been searching for the overdue hunter for nearly 12 hours.

Wednesday night, just before 9:30 p.m., the Adams County sheriff's office was notified that Gerald Strovers, who had traveled to the Thread Lake area earlier that morning to go duck hunting, had not yet returned.

When deputies began searching for Strovers that night they found his truck parked next to the access area of Thread Lake, but no sign of Strovers. Deputies suspended the search around 2:30 a.m. to wait for daybreak.

Around 8:15 Thursday morning, Strovers' body was discovered about 40 feet from shore in waist deep water. Deputies believe Strovers had gone into the water early Wednesday morning and could not get out on his own.

Deputies said that in order to recover Strovers' body, they had to walk across 30 feet of ice and then into open water.

His black lab remained at his side until searchers arrived.
