WASHINGTON. - The economy grew for a second straight quarter from October through December, posting a 5.7 percent annual rate, the fastest pace since the third quarter of 2003. The Commerce Department report is the strongest evidence to date that the worst recession since the 1930s ended last year. Meanwhile, wages and benefits were up 1.5 percent, the weakest showing on records that go back to 1982.>>

WASHINGTON. - A day after the State of the Union address, President Barack Obama is taking his hopes for a healthier economy to Florida. Obama told the nation yesterday that he knows Americans have been unhappy and frustrated about the pace of change since he was elected. Republicans say they want a "seat at the table" and not just the monthly meetings offered in his State of the Union speech last night by President Barack Obama.>>

WASHINGTON. - The day before his State Of The Union speech and his prime time effort to win back lost support, President Obama got a devastating projection on the nation's key issue: the economy. Unemployment will stay at or above 10 percent for the rest of this year and improve only slightly next year.>>

WASHINGTON. - Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner says the nation's economy is stronger than it was a year ago, yet the government must continue to act to stimulate job growth.

Geithner told the Senate Finance Committee Tuesday that the Obama administration is trying to balance the desire to add jobs with the need to rein in ballooning budget deficits.

President Barack Obama has proposed giving companies a $5,000 tax credit for each new worker they hire in 2010. Businesses that increase wages or hours for their current workers in 2010 would be reimbursed for the extra Social Security payroll taxes they would pay.

Key Democrat: bipartisan support for jobs credit

A key Democratic senator says there is bipartisan support in the Senate to pass a bill that offers tax credits to employers that add workers, like the credit President Barack Obama has proposed.

Sen. Max Baucus of Montana, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, said at a hearing Tuesday that he supports Obama's plan.

He noted that other senators on the committee, including Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, have proposed similar bills.
