Fire destroys Hillyard tavern and apartments

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane fire department is investigating a three alarm fire that destroyed a Hillyard Tavern and several apartments Saturday morning.

The fire at the Alaskan Tavern started around 5:45 Saturday morning.  The building is located at the intersection of Market and Queen in Hillyard.  The fire destroyed the tavern, a neighboring barbershop and several apartments in the building.

When firefighters arrived the fire was quickly upgraded from a two-alarm to a three-alarm fire, and firefighters moved from an offensive attack to a defensive attack.  The building was a complete loss, and a collapse zone was established for the structure.

Six people were displaced by the fire and are receiving assistance from the Red Cross.  They are providing all tenants with food and clothing, and providing housing for two people.  The landlord of the building is providing temporary housing for two other tenants and everyone else is staying with family or friends.

No one was injured in the fire, and the cause remains under investigation.
