TACOMA, Wash. (AP) - A 40-year-old Washington National Guard soldier from Tacoma who chose to stay in Iraq after his unit returned home has died in an American military hospital in Germany.

The Defense Department said Friday that Sgt. William Spencer died Thursday. A National Guard news release says the injuries Spencer suffered last weekend were not combat-related.

Spencer deployed with the Washington National Guard's 81st Brigade Combat Team and chose to stay with the Mississippi National Guard unit that replaced it. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 146th Field Artillery Regiment in Olympia.
