Tsunami barely registers in Pacific Northwest

SEATTLE, Wash. (AP) - The tsunami generated by Saturday's earthquake in Chile reached the Pacific Northwest with non-damaging waves registering along the Oregon and Washington coasts.

The National Weather Service kept a tsunami advisory in effect and warned that sea levels were still rising Saturday afternoon. The advisory indicated that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or waves was expected.

But amid typical swells of several feet and a dropping tide in the afternoon, gawkers who showed up at the coast didn't notice much, if anything.

Patrick Corcoran is an education and outreach specialist with the Oregon Sea Grant program. He headed out to the Oregon coast at Seaside to use the tsunami as a "teachable moment." He approached people walking their dogs and eating ice cream near the shore and gave impromptu lectures on the real tsunami danger in the Northwest, which is that the region is due for a big quake just off the coast.
