New message from Osama bin Laden

CAIRO (AP) - The self-professed mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, Khalid Sheik Mohammed, has said execution would make him a martyr, and he would welcome it. But Osama bin Laden is threatening to kill Americans if that happens.

Al-Jazeera aired an audio recording of the al-Qaida leader today, in which he explicitly mentions Khalid Sheik Mohammed. And he says if Mohammed or the four suspects charged with him are executed, then any American taken captive by al-Qaida will also be killed.

Bin Laden also says President Barack Obama is following in the footsteps of his predecessor, George W. Bush, by escalating the war in Afghanistan, being "unjust" to al-Qaida prisoners and supporting Israel's occupation of Palestinian land.

Al-Qaida is not known to be holding any Americans, but a Taliban faction based in Pakistan is holding Pfc. Bowe Berghdal. The soldier was captured in eastern Afghanistan last year.

Mohammed is charged with murder and war crimes, and the Obama administration is considering whether to try him and his fellow plotters in a civilian court or hold a military tribunal.
