SPOKANE, Wash. – The City of Spokane is still considering ways to control the growing ground squirrel population in Finch Arboretum but they will not use a controversial device known as the "Rodenator" as they have in previous years.

The "Rodenator" fills burrows and tunnels with a gas which is ignited to collapse the tunnels.  The Humane Society called the explosions "cruel" when the City used them in 2008.

The explosions were so loud that some neighbors called 9-1-1 last year.

Ground squirrels typically wake from hibernation in early spring and start breeding when the weather warms-up.

Authorities are considering a plan to trap and relocate the ground squirrels which burrow under trees and destroy root systems of wildlife in Finch Arboretum.

Nearby freeway traffic and residential populations have reduced the number of natural predators the ground squirrel has in the area.

A city spokeswoman says the "Rodenator" equipment is still owned by the Parks Department

and could be used in the future, but they do not plan to use it this year.

The underground labyrinth is used as storage space at Mount Saint Michael’s Academy in Spokane. But several decades ago it served as a safe haven. During the Cold War, the Office of Civil Defense designated the basement at Saint Michael’s as one of hundreds of fallout shelters throughout the city.
