Pit bull euthanized after Idaho schoolyard attack

BLACKFOOT, Idaho (AP) - A 28-year-old Blackfoot man faces several misdemeanor charges and his pit bull dog has been euthanized after attacking and injuring three people in a schoolyard last week.

Blackfoot Police Department Capt. Kurt Asmus says Abel S. DeLuna faces charges of harboring a vicious dog, allowing his dog to rush a person, failure to get a dog license, failure to get a rabies shot and a city infraction of allowing his dog to run at large.

The dog was euthanized Monday at the request of the Southeast Idaho Health Department. Expediting the testing kept the three bite victims from having to begin a series of painful rabies vaccines. Superintendent Scott Crane says a student at Blackfoot Sixth Grade School was hospitalized after Thursday's attack. A teacher received stitches for a puncture wound while another student who was bitten did not require stitches. Nine others received minor injuries, including scratches and bruises incurred during the commotion.
