EADS will bid on US Air Force tanker contract
WASHINGTON (AP) - A European defense contractor says it will make its own bid for the U.S. Air Force's long-delayed $35 billion contract for a fleet of new refueling jets. The European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company, also known as EADS, has decided to challenge rival Boeing Co. by itself. Its one-time American partner, Northrop Grumman Corp., dropped out earlier this year after saying the Pentagon project unfairly favored Boeing.
Northrop and EADS had planned to offer a military version of the A-330 jet made by the EADS subsidiary Airbus. The Pentagon tried for most of the decade to award a contract for 179 new aerial refueling planes to either Boeing or Northrop. But those efforts were derailed by problems ranging from claims the competition was unfair to a criminal case against a top defense official.
