FDA chief: reducing salt is health priority

WASHINGTON (AP) - The head of the Food and Drug Administration says reducing salt in the diets of Americans is a "very important public health priority." Dr. Margaret Hamburg tells The Associated Press the agency will be working with the food industry on, what she hopes will be, "some substantial voluntary reductions" in prepared food.

An independent group is urging the FDA to regulate the amount of salt in food. The Institute of Medicine says the food industry hasn't done enough to voluntarily cut back.

Hamburg says her agency is reviewing the recommendations. But she says setting legal limits would take longer than collaborating with food makers on salt-cutting goals.

Americans eat about 1½ teaspoons of salt daily, more than double what they need for good health. It's high enough to increase risk of high blood pressure and other problems.

    SANDPOINT, Idaho. First -  it was a robocall, now a threat, targetting a Sandpoint newspaper and one of its writers, has surfaced on YouTube. "Ben Olson is a cancer on wholesome North Idaho," the video states. "And cancers must be burned out." The 56-second video clip shows a picture of Co-owner and Publisher of the Sandpoint Reader, Ben Olson, next to a stack of the newspaper he writes for. The papers are doused in a clear liquid then lit on fire.
