South Hill woman arrested for embezzlement

SPOKANE, Wash. - A South Hill woman who told investigators she had a gambling problem has been arrested for Fraud and first-degree theft after she forged and cashed business checks totaling more than $10,000.

Wendy Jean Tappa was arrested by Spokane Valley Police Officer Jeff Welton Thursday and booked into the Spokane County Jail on the two felony charges.

The owner of Northwest Consulting Solutions LLC told Welton he hired Tappa as office manager in October 2009. In April of this year, he was notified by his bank that the company's account was overdrawn.

Bank officials also said that Tappa had been in the bank regularly to cash a lot of payroll checks, and that a Spokane Valley gambling business had been in to cash checks payable to Tappa.

The owner confronted Tappa and determined that she had traced his signature on as many at 15 checks, one for as much at $1,300.

When searching the suspect for transport to jail, Welton found a fraudulently-endorsed business check in her pocket for $627. She told Welton she had forgotten she had that one.
