6 seniors injured in north Spokane retirement community fire

SPOKANE, Wash.- 6 seniors were injured in a fire at the Maplewood Gardens Retirement Community at 1100 North Superior in north Spokane. The fire broke out Tuesday night just after 10:30. According to Assistant Fire Chief Brian Schaffer, the building's smoke alarm first alerted authorities to the fire. Then fire dispatch started receiving numerous calls from residents in the community.

The fire broke out in a bedroom on the fourth floor of the retirement community. At this time it's not clear how it started, but fire investigators are expected to be on scene Wednesday to determine a cause. Assistant Fire Chief Brian Schaffer says the building's sprinkler system was able to keep the fire contained to that fourth floor bedroom.

When fire crews arrived at the building, they saw smoke pouring through the fourth floor window and immediately upgraded the call to a working structure fire. They used one of their engine ladders to get to the fourth floor and were able to get the fire quickly out.

6 seniors were injured as a result of the fire and one person was taken to an area hospital as a precautionary measure. Initial reports show that none of the six were injured in the actual fire, but suffered minor injuries as a result of the below freezing temperatures. All are expected to be okay.
