Cougar fight song declared "best in the west"

PULLMAN, Wash. - The words "Fight, Fight, Fight for Washington State" have landed themselves in the modern day collegiate record books.  BleacherReport.com has rated the Cougar fight song as the Best in the West, and ranks the song as the 8th best in the nation.

According to its website, the song was selected for its originality, history, spirit, appeal, musicality and the ever-popular "intangibles."

"Perhaps the most recognizable aspect of (sports) pageantry—and perhaps the most storied—is the collegiate fight song," said sportswriter David Luther who authored the report.  No other West Coast school was included in the website's list of top 15 college anthems.

The website hailed the song for its history, given that WSU's fight song was originally composed in 1919 for a class project by Zella Melcher and Phyllis Sayles.  Also, noted was the fact this song has the singular honor of being immortalized by John Candy in the 1980's comedy "Volunteers."

Topping the list of best college fight songs, is the only other fight song to make the list written in the 19th century, Hail to "The Victors," by The University of Michigan.

"Ben Olson is a cancer on wholesome North Idaho," the video states. "And cancers must be burned out." The 56-second video clip shows a picture of Co-owner and Publisher of the Sandpoint Reader, Ben Olson, next to a stack of the newspaper he writes for. The papers are doused in a clear liquid then lit on fire.
