SWAT Team Makes Arrest in Cheney

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE - A 23-year-old Cheney resident was in custody Monday morning after threatening his father with a rifle during a domestic dispute on Lance Hill Road.

Mitchell W. Blakely was booked into the Spokane County Jail on a felony count of Second-Degree Assault after being arrested about 10 a.m. Monday.

Blakely's father went to the Cheney Police Department about 7 a.m. and reported the assault to officers there.  He said the son had threatened him with a .22-caliber rifle and then assaulted him with an ashtray as the two fought over the gun. The father reportedly suffered only minor injuries.

Because Blakely is considered a caution suspect based on past police contacts, had several dogs at the residence, had access to firearms inside the home and had no telephone, the sheriff's SWAT Team was called to the scene to make the arrest.

A SWAT spokesman said Blakely followed instruction and was taken into custody without incident.  He had injuries stemming from the earlier domestic violence incident that were treated before he was taken to jail.

Detective Mike Ricketts wrote and executed a search warrant on the home afterward and recovered a pair of .22-caliber rifles, one of which was equipped with a crude homemade silencer.

Lance Hill Road south of Highway 904 was closed for about an hour during the arrest operation.
