Barker Bridge Nears Completion
SPOKANE VALEY, Wash. - The City of Spokane Valley says construction work is wrapping-up on the Barker Bridge across the Spokane River. No final date has been set to re-open the bridge, but authorities say it should happen in mid to late June.
Work started in July of 2008 to replace the bridge. Traffic lanes and sidewalks have been widened, and bike lanes are being added.
Traffic over the river has been detoured to Sullivan Road and bus routes have been altered since 2008.
The work is being paid for with a federal grant and tax money from Spokane Valley. The total cost of the project is about $11.8 million, according to the city.
Some neighbors in the area complained about the detour, pointing out it takes up to 10 minutes longer to get to the freeway.
Others pointed out the detour has reduced traffic on the street and allowed their children to play outside without fear of traffic.
Pedestrians and bicyclists using Centennial Trail have been rerouted during construction, but the City says trail use will be restored sometime this summer.
