Liberty Lake is in play after $6 million facelift

LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. - It sweeps down the fairways, finds its way through the fescue and leaves the flags all aflutter. And now, the breeze so prevalent, is relevant once again at Liberty Lake.  After almost two years of reconstruction the closed sign is just a few chores short of coming down.

"I've been in the business a long time, but it's been 19 months since we had a customer," said Liberty Lake head pro Kit DeAndre. "Finally comes the realization, getting ready to go. Gotta have the i's and t's crossed."

DeAndre, an enthusiastic tour guide, can't wait to present the county's pristine new tract. The course underwent a $6 million facelift, one in which wrinkles are welcome and flat is a forgotten concept.

"Liberty Lake was always considered flat and boring," he explains. "It won't be boring anymore."

The renovated course has four ponds that feed the course's state-of-the-art irrigation. The largest pond is framed by holes 6, 7 and 8. Another one makes the old third hole a distant memory. And the new 18th hole has a new look, too. The number of bunkers nearly doubled, along with the green size.

Watching DeAndre put around the new course makes it look easy, but the course still has teeth. How much to chew, though, is really up to the golfer. Now there are four choices at the tee, and that can change things dramatically.

"As the golf pro, I'm biased," explains DeAndre. "But I'm sure the public's gonna want to play it more than once."

From sight lines to a spiffy new logo, after a 20-month transformation the new Liberty Lake is back in play.
