Golden Sunlight Mine Wants Permit Change

BUTTE, Mont. - The Golden Sunlight Mine at Whitehall wants to amend its operating permit to take advantage of gold prices above $1,100 an ounce.

The Department of Environmental Quality says the mine wants to construct an open pit of about 24 acres with a maximum depth of about 300 feet. The agency is reviewing the company's application. General Manager Tim Dimock says the area includes low-grade ore that would be profitable to remove with gold prices at their highest in recent memory.

The project also would enable the mine to begin production as soon as next January, six months before it had planned to begin processing ore from the mine's main Mineral Hill Pit. Crews are working there to strip waste rock above the ore. Dimock says the mine is still expected to end production in 2015.
