Wallet Survives Fire, Water, and 53 Years of Hiding
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The brown wallet found during the cleanup of fire-ravaged Whatcom Middle School holds everything you'd expect a 14-year-old to have in 1956 or 1957. Principal Jeff Coulter believes the wallet has been hidden inside the Bellingham school for the more than 50 years.
According to the YMCA and student body cards inside, it belonged to Henry Heidman, an eighth grader at the time. A construction worker found the wallet while emptying out a built-in cabinet in Room 206 on the top floor. A Nov. 5 fire closed the school and scattered its students around the district. During the work to remove the damaged interior, construction workers were asked to keep an eye out for a rumored time capsule hidden somewhere in the 107-year-old school. And the wallet appeared.
