Idaho School Districts Scale Back on Sports
POCATELLO, Idaho (AP) - Student athletes across Idaho are expected to travel less, compete in fewer events and pay more in participation fees next year as school districts scale back on athletics programs.
John Billets is executive director of the Idaho High School Activities Association and says 90 percent of the 154 high schools that belong to the organization are trimming funding for athletics to help balance their budgets.
In eastern Idaho, the reductions range from lower salaries for coaches to planning travel arrangements with other teams when possible to cut down on expenses.
The district that governs schools in Pocatello and Chubbuck plans, among other cuts, to eliminate the use of special assistant coaches designated to care for student with injuries. That task will be handed over to the regular coach.
