SPOKANE, Wash.- The Kootenai County Sheriff's Department is investigating the discovery of a drowning victim in the Spokane River near Corbin Park in Post Falls.

According to the Sheriff's Department, they received a call just before 6:00 Thursday morning from a man that told them he and friend put a canoe into the water at the east end of Corbin Park. They were attempting to float to the old Pleasant View Bridge area.

Shortly after pushing out from shore, the canoe flipped and tossed both men into the water. That man told Sheriff's deputies he was able to hold on to the canoe for a while, and then get to shore. He says he last saw his friend floating in the river just below the first set of rapids.

The man who called authorities then walked back to his vehicle at Pleasant View to get his cell phone and call for help.

Just before 7:00 Thursday morning, a MedStar helicopter spotted the missing person floating in about four feet of water, just below Corbin Park. Sheriff's Dive Rescue divers were able to recover the body. That person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheriff's Deputies say neither of the two men were wearing any life-preservers.

The Sheriff's office is withholding the name of the deceased until next of kin has been notified.
