Officials Overseeing Oil Spill Efforts Keeping Eye On Possible Storm
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Officials overseeing the Gulf oil spill clean-up and containment operations are keeping a close eye on the weather.
There's an area of low-pressure in the Caribbean off the coast of Honduras, and the National Hurricane Center says it has a "high chance" of turning into the first tropical depression of the Atlantic hurricane season. An Air Force reconnaissance plane has been sent to investigate the system.
BP says it would need about five days to move all of its equipment out of harm's way if a storm threatens the area where the ruptured well is located. That process has not been started.
The equipment to be secured would include ships working to process oil being siphoned by the containment cap as well as the rigs drilling the two relief wells.
