First On KHQ.com: The Tax Man Cometh- That Summer Sip Of Soda's Going To Cost You!

OLYMPIA, Wash.- If you enjoy a cold can of soda during these hot summer days, starting today, it's going to cost you. A six-pack of soda in Washington state is going to cost an extra 12 cents starting today.

The new tax is part of a budget-balancing package of tax increases approved earlier this year by state lawmakers and amounts to 2 cents per 12-ounce bottle or can. But it is being assessed at the bottler or distributor level and will be built into the wholesale cost stores pay on future shipments. Stores will be responsible for paying the tax to the state on any soda they have on hand today.

The soda tax is the latest in a series of new taxes that Washington state residents have had to deal with in the past two months. In May, a pack of cigarettes went up by a dollar a pack, making most packs around $8-9. Then in June candy and bottled water were hit with a tax as well.

Previous Coverage:

Taxes on candy, gum, bottled water and beer are expected to bring in a combined $122 million over the next year to help deal with a $2.8 billion state budget gap stemming largely from the recession.

Smokers and soda-sippers also are being tapped: A $1-per-pack boost in the cigarette tax kicked in May 1, and a tax on carbonated beverages starts July 1. Together, those two are expected to bring in $135 million by the end of June 2011.
