Fireworks: What you Need to Know.

SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane City Fire Marshal will be on patrol for the 4th of July weekend searching for illegal fireworks.

Since 1993, Spokane County has banned fireworks with the exceptions of Airway Heights, Deer Park and Tribal Lands. Firecrackers, bottle rockets, sparklers and missiles are not allowed in any part of Washington State and can be confiscated at any time, with the exception of some Indian Reservations in areas designated by the Tribal Council.

Fines range from $513.00 to $1,000.00 for each violation. In addition to the fines and court costs, persons who start fires with fireworks are liable for restitution of damaged property and for recovery of Fire Department response costs. Parents are also responsible for damages associated with their children using fireworks.

Spokane City Fire Marshal Lisa Jones says any experimental changes made to fireworks could result in serious consequences.

"They're in affect making a bomb. And law enforcement takes that very seriously, you can be charged with a felony, you can be arrested," said Jones.

Since the ban was introduced, fireworks related fires have dropped dramatically. In 1985, Spokane County saw 260 fires related to fireworks. The year the ban was put in place, there were zero fireworks related fires.
