Spokane's South Hill: Six Apartment Units Damaged by Structure Fire

SPOKANE, Wash.- Several residents of a apartment were awakened Friday morning by smoke and flames when a fire broke out at their apartment. The fire broke out just after 3:00 Friday morning in an apartment in the 2000 block of West 9th Avenue.

According to Fire Battalion Chief Dan Brown, the fire started in a second floor unit. It spread to several other units and into the roof. When firefighters arrived on scene, they found the apartment engulfed in smoke and flames.

At least six units were seriously damaged, though firefighters say there were no injuries. One witness, Stephanie Darnell, told KHQ that she was awakened by the smell of smoke. She ran outside the apartment, which is a converted home, and saw the flames coming from the second story unit. She then called 911 and started banging on other unit's doors.

Megan Snow of the Red Cross says the person in the second unit apartment barely escaped without injury. That person managed to make it out with only the clothes on his back and didn't even have on shoes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
