Press Release: Shooting Critically Injures Chattaroy Man

SPOKANE, Wash. - Press Release from Spokane County Sheriff's Dept.

A 19-year-old Chattaroy man has been declared brain dead following an apparent accidental shooting about 10:20 p.m. Saturday.

The victim was flown by air ambulance to a downtown hospital where he remained on life support equipment Sunday.

Deputies were called to a home in the 37000 block of North Madison Road in Elk Saturday night by a 24-year-old man who reported he had accidentally shot his friend.

The man said he had been to a barbecue earlier and had shown his pistol to a couple during the meal.  He had removed the cylinder pin and not replaced it before reholstering his revolver.

Later, he and the vicim began playing a game of pool in a shop at the shooter's home.  While the victim was making a series of pool shots, the shooter began attempting to reassemble the pistol by forcing the cylinder rod into the cocked firearm.

The gun fired and the bullet hit the victim in the head.  The shooter had consumed a couple of beers at the barbecue and afterward one in the shop, he told detectives.

Identity of the victim will be released by the Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office.  The incident remains under investigation.
